Madeira Charter Update:
the short version
Issue 16 on the November 3, 2026 ballot, in one minute. Written by Logan Junger, one of your council members. I am voting yes.
It will not lower the price of gas or groceries, and it will not raise your taxes. It is the one question on this ballot that is entirely up to Madeira.
- No new tax, no new fee. Council, elections, term limits and open records stay exactly as they are.
- Nothing changes about the two downtown houses on November 4. No sale, no teardown.
- The Depot stays protected. It is on the National Register.
- The charter is from 1959. Voters have updated it ten times. This is the eleventh.
- Fourteen articles are listed on the ballot. Most edits are wording. There are eight real updates, and a marked‑up copy shows every change.
- The debated change is who decides about the two houses. Today the charter decides. After a yes, your Council decides, in public.
What this is not: not a sale, not a teardown, not a zoning change, not a tax. Issue 16 changes no zoning. What can be built on that corner is set by the zoning code, which Council changes only in public, with Planning Commission review.
On your ballot it is Issue 16, on page 3. Register or update your registration by Monday, October 5. Mail ballots go out and early voting starts Tuesday, October 6. Ask for a mail ballot by 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 27. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
